How to check food without a halal label
Shopping in a supermarket where halal labels are uncommon can leave you with questions about everyday food. Use this checklist to compare a product record with your packaging and identify what still needs confirmation.
A missing halal label does not, by itself, settle a product's status. HalalVerify provides recorded product information and ingredient screening; it does not issue halal certificates or a religious ruling for your particular circumstances.
1. Find the exact product
Search food by product name or barcode. Compare the brand, variant, pack size and barcode with the item you are buying. If the record describes a different version, do not rely on its assessment for yours.
2. Compare the full ingredient list
Read your current packaging alongside the recorded ingredients. A missing or incomplete list needs more information. If the lists differ, use the current label when asking the manufacturer about that specific item.
3. Investigate ingredients with unclear sources
Record the exact ingredient name or E-number and the question you need answered. A brief ingredient name may not provide the source or processing details needed for an assessment. Do not treat an unexplained database label as evidence of certification.
4. Ask for information tied to your product
Send the manufacturer the barcode, product name, country of purchase and a photograph of the ingredient list. Include the batch details if available. These questions can help make the response specific:
- What is the source of the ingredient I have highlighted?
- Does your answer apply to this product version and market?
- Is this exact product halal certified? If so, which organisation certifies it and how can I verify the certificate?
If a certificate is provided, confirm its scope and validity with the named certifier. For questions about how to interpret ingredient evidence, consult a qualified adviser or certifier you trust.
5. Keep uncertainty visible
An unknown or incomplete record is not confirmation that a food is halal or haram. Keep the packaging and any manufacturer response together so you can check what supports the assessment. Avoid extending a finding about one product to every product from the same brand.
Using HalalVerify while shopping
Start with the product and barcode search, open the matching record and read the ingredient explanations. You can share that product's direct link with someone helping you review it. For help using the website, visit the HalalVerify frequently asked questions.
